An easy place to bring more than one family

Timber Lodge is a three-story log home on the west side of Orcas Island, gated and set back in the trees, with a pond and a waterfall at the entrance. The great room rises through an open-beam ceiling to the loft above, wrapped around a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and the westerly windows look out across Eastsound and the Gulf Islands.

Five bedrooms sleep twelve - four kings, two queens, three and a half baths - so nobody draws the short straw. The kitchen is set up to cook for the whole group: granite counters, a full-size range and the gadgets a serious cook goes looking for. The dining room seats eight, with a breakfast bar for the overflow.

When the weather turns, the lower level is where everyone ends up - a home theater with a 120-inch screen, 7.1 surround and reclining seats for ten, and a game room with a pool table, two stand-up arcades, darts, karaoke and a player piano. When it doesn't, there is a six-person hot tub under an overhang so it works year round, wraparound decks that follow the sun, a life-size chessboard, a hammock in the trees and a teepee in the woods.

Nobody is in a hurry here. The ferry sets the pace on the way over, and the island keeps it once you have arrived.

Year-round

Snow on the chessboard.

Winter on Orcas is the quiet season - the island empties out, the forest goes still, and the lodge is at its coziest. Light the stone fireplace, run the hot tub in the cold, and take the whole property for well under peak rates.
